Pittsburgh Accidental Death Lawsuit

According to the National Safety Council, somebody in the United States dies every five minutes from an accident.   Accidents are the fifth largest cause of death in this country, falling short only of the major killers—heart disease, cancer, stroke and chronic respiratory disease.  However, depending on your age, you are more likely to die from accidental death than from illness.  For those between 1 and 41, not only are accidental deaths the number one killer, they are also increasing at a greater rate than other leading causes of death.

Top causes of accidental death in Pittsburgh and elsewhere

While the top causes of accidental deaths by category are prone to vary from year to year, a handful of culprits always remain near the top of the list.

  • Car crashes: Year in and year out, the number one cause of accidental death in the United States is—not surprisingly—car accidents.  More specifically, fatalities from auto accidents stem from negligent driving, such as being distracted, or driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • Poisoning: Another leading cause of accidental death in America is poisoning.  Most poisonings are accidental, though a significant portion of deaths from poisoning are suicides.  The most common killer is an overdose of drugs.  What is most surprising, however, is that many instances of poisoning come from drugs that are perceived as safe: over-the-counter medication and prescription drugs.  In one year alone, from 2006 to 2007, death from poisoning rose five percentage points.  Over the last decade, over 300 percent more white women have died from poisoning than from the previous decade.  Other common sources of poisoning are household toxins such as cleaners, which usually affect young children.

  • Falls: This is a broad category, but falls—in their many forms—are one of the top causes of accidental death in America.  In 2006 alone nearly 15,000 Americans died from falls.

The above list describes just the leading causes of accidental death in the United States.  Other significant causes include choking, drowning, fires, firearms and complications from medical procedures.   If your loved one has been killed due to someone else's negligence, an accidental death lawsuit may be warranted.
